Bulgaria's top officials plan hefty increases to their salaries, the country's Finance Ministry has revealed.

If the planned amendments are passed by the Parliament, the monthly salaries of the Prime Minister and the Parliamentary Chair will reach BGN 7000 (approximately EUR 3567).

Increases are also envisioned for the salaries of Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Deputy Parliamentary Chairs, as well as the members of independent Parliamentary committees, Finance Minister Simeon Djankov has told reporters.

Currently, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov is paid BGN 3300 per month.

According to Djankov, it is "unrealistic" for a person who has "an administrative responsibility for a whole country" to receive so little.

Djankov's own monthly salary is BGN 2700.

If approved by the MPs, the planned amendments will enter into force in August 2013, after the country's next general elections.
