Bulgaria Exceeds Winter Tourism Expectations with 25% Surge in Foreign Visitors
Bulgaria's winter tourism season has surpassed expectations, with a remarkable 25% increase in foreign visitors compared to initial projections

In April 2012, Bulgarians' travels abroad decreased by 3.8% compared to the same month of 2011 and increased by 7.8% compared to March 2012, according to data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI).
Bulgarians made a total of 332 000 journeys abroad.
Despite the annual decrease in the segment, Bulgarians' trips to Serbia went up by 71.4%, to France by 58.6% and to Macedonia by 38.5%.
At the same time, the largest decreases were registered in travels to Spain (by 29.5%), to Austria (by 29.3%) and to Italy (by 21.9%).
In April 2012, holiday and recreation travels accounted for the largest share of all travels, at 49.5%, followed by business trips at 31.9%, and trips for other purposes (visit, education, cultural and sports events) at 18.6%.
Holiday and recreation travels registered an increase of 122.5%, while business trips and trips for other purposes fell by 30.5% and 48%, respectively.
In April 2012, the highest number of business trips was to Germany, at 61.9%, while most of Bulgarians' trips to Spain, Greece and Turkey were for holiday purposes.
In April 2012, 461 700 visitors arrived in Bulgaria, up by 37% from March 2012 and down by 14% from April 2011.
In April 2012, the number of visitors from EU member states fell by 23.3% compared to April 2011.
Visitors from Greece and Romania decreased by 28.3% and 26.7%, respectively.
However, visitors from the Czech Republic increased by 6.9% and visitors from Spain went up by 2.7%.
Visits of citizens of other European countries increased by 5.9%, the biggest spikes being in visits by Russians (22.2%) and Ukrainians (17.4%).
