INTERIOR MINISTER IN DOUBT WITH FILE COMMISSION

Politics | August 13, 2001, Monday // 00:00

The Classified Files Commission wants to appropriate too much power, not given to it by law, new Interior Minister Georgy Petkanov said, quoted by Standart. He said that he won`t allow the commission to see the official archive of the IM and the archive of Secret Services. In accordance with a decision of the parliament from 1994, the archive of SS till 1991 isn`t a state secret, retorted Metody Andreev, chief of the commission. He insists on `full access` to the data to examine 20-30 cases, like the so-called revival process and the influence of the SS upon the intellectuals. Until Wednesday the IM should give an answer to the commission as to whether it will have access to the documents of a certain minister in the new cabinet who proved to have a file. IM and the secret services are not obliged to make available to the commission the additional data on this subject, Petkanov said. He said that he`s aware who`s the minister with a secret file, but hasn`t the right to give out his name.
