Bulgarians will have to pay much higher electricity bills due to the government's decision to abandon the Belene Nuclear Power Plant project, according to Sergey Stanishev, leader of left-wing oppositional Bulgarian Socialist Party.
Stanishev pointed out that nuclear energy is the cheapest electricity source in the world.
At the end of March, the center-right GERB government decided to scrap the Belene Nuclear Power Plant project, prompting the Bulgarian Socialist Party and far-right Ataka to submit a no-confidence vote against it. However, Ataka's parliamentary group decided to withdraw its support from the no-confidence vote.
On Monday, it was made clear that the no-confidence vote will not be held, since it is now supported by less than 20% of all MPs, which is the bare minimum under the country's legislation.
"If Mr. Borisov wants a debate on Belene, he can launch it...If there was something wrong (with the project) why didn't he take any measures? Why has his cabinet spent hundreds of millions of Euro?" Satnishev told reporters on Monday, referring to Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
