Fast-food chain Subway has announced it is to open its first restaurant in the southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.

The first "Subway" in Plovdiv will be located in Mall Plovdiv, and will be formally launched on April 21, Saturday.

The new Subway restaurant in Plovdiv will be the 24th franchise of the fast food brand in Bulgaria.

Subway plans to have a total of 40 restaurants in Bulgaria by the end of 2012, the company said.

"The business model of Subway Bulgaria is directed at the entrepreneurs from all over the country who wish to develop their own business according to an established model that does not require major initial investments," Ivan Todorov, CEO of Subway Bulgaria is quoted as saying.

Since it first entered the Bulgarian market in 2008, Subway has opened 15 restaurants in Sofia, 4 in Varna, 2 in Burgas, and 2 in Sunny Beach.
