Bulgaria is the European champion in wasting energy, according to President, Rosen Plevneliev.

Plevneliev delivered Thursday his first ever 10-minute-long address to Members of the Parliament, summarizing the results of his meetings with parliamentary represented parties, called by him political consultations.

"The solution to stop this wasting is energy effectiveness. Spared energy is the cheapest energy. We must outline specific ways to do so and need at least BGN 1 B for it," said he.

The President pointed out Bulgaria has managed to achieve diversification of energy sources all while the project to build a second nuclear power plant in the Danube town of Belene has been subject of heated debates during all political consultations.

Plevneliev reiterated that he thought the Cabinet's decision to scrap the project was the right one since Belene was economically unsound, unprofitable and a risk for future generations.

He also noted the achieved consensus for attracting business and research firms in increasing innovations, particularly in farming, tourism, and other important sectors.

Plevneliev praised the parties for placing important for Bulgaria issues such as energy effectiveness, economy measures and reforms, higher on their agenda than political differences.
