Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev declared that the mission of his opposition formation is to topple the center-right government of the GERB party and Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
"If we allow four more years of GERB in power, Borisov's party will make things absolutely irreversible for Bulgaria," Stanishev declared Wednesday during a visit in the town of Kazanlak in central Bulgaria.
"We have a nationally responsible mission – to remove GERB from power – and this becomes clear with our political behavior and messages. Expanding the party influence beyond its lines, new conditioning of the members are only some of the ways to do that," he added.
Stanishev, who is also the interim President of the Party of European Socialists and a former PM in 2005-2009, criticized his opponent for the party leadership, ex President (2002-2012) Georgi Parvanov, for making "self-destructive" hints of collaboration with the GERB party.
Stanishev and Parvanov are to have a face off in a leadership battle at a party congress in May 2012.
"Yes, I have my criticism for Georgi Parvanov about his political line, policy towards GERB. One cannot be beating about the bush," Stanishev stated, arguing that the Socialist Party "will be over if it is to turn into a left GERB."
