Bulgaria: 500 Bulgarian Filling Stations Face Closure over Missing Level Gauges Photo by tek.bg

Some 500 filling stations are facing forced closure over their failure to install level gauges, according to Ivaylo Nikolov, Chair of the Association of Traders at Small and Medium Filling Stations.

In a Monday interview for Darik radio Nikolov explained that a number of rural areas would be left without filling stations and a minimum of 2500 people would lose their jobs as a result.

The deadline for the installation of the level gauges expires on April 02, alongside the deadline for the mandatory electronic connection of all commercial sites to the information system of the National Revenue Agency (NRA).

The revenue authority has not yet come up with summarized data on the number of electronic devices already mounted electronic but tax officials are adamant that the deadlines are realistic.

Owners of filling stations had to provide an electronic connection between the cash registers at the sites and the NRA database by January 11, 2011.

Asked to comment on the matter, Rosen Bachvarov, spokesperson for the NRA, said that both deadlines were achievable and the penalties, a fine of up to BGN 10 000 and forced closure of the site, had been provided for cases of noncompliance.

Bachvarov was positive that most businesses had managed to observe the regulations.

Inspections of tax officials start on April 03 and will first target filling stations.
