Yordanka Fandakova, Mayor of Bulgaria's capital Sofia, has once again promised that measures will be taken to deal with the city's grave stray dogs problem.

"There is no other way of solving this issue besides an increased and massive neutering and the construction of new shelters," Fandakova stated on Monday.

She spoke several hours after an 88-year-old man was brutally attacked by a large pack of stray dogs in the Malinova Dolina quarter in the Bulgarian capital. The man's life is still in danger.

Whoever wants to look after dogs should do it at home, Fandakova also stated, pointing out that citizens have controversially fed stray dogs with raw bones.

The Sofia municipality recently moved to implant microchips to all the stray dogs in the city in order to track them more efficiently. However, no significant results from the move can be currently observed, as no electronic municipal registry exists for both stray dogs and domestic ones.

Prior to being reelected at the end of October 2011, Fandakova vowed to "cut down in half the number of stray dogs in the Bulgarian capital the next two years."

There are about 10 000 officially registered stray dogs in Sofia.

An average of 800-900 cases of tapeworm infection are registered in Bulgaria each year. This number constitutes as much as 54% of the total instances per year in the whole EU.
