Bulgaria's far-right Ataka (Attack) party has expressed its disappointment over the government's decision to quit the construction of the Belene Nuclear Power Plant project.

Ruling centrist-right GERB's decision to abandon Belene is a "betrayal of Bulgaria's national interest," Ataka MP Pavel Shopov declared on Wednesday.

Shopov pointed out that Turkey is building four nuclear power plants and that Romania will apparently develop its nuclear energy.

According to Shopov, the government quit Belene because of "foreign pressure."

Bulgaria?s government announced on Wednesday it has abandoned plans to build a new, 2000 megawatt nuclear power plant on the Danube River for which it has contracted Russian state firm Atomstroyexport.

The government has proposed that a gas power plant is built on the site in Belene.
