Taxi fares in Sofia will increase by an average BGN 0.15-0.20 per kilometer, according to taxi business owners.

At present, taxis in the capital charge BGN 0.59-0.69 per kilometer.

The planned 30% increase has been attributed to the rising fuel costs.

In an interview for private TV station bTV on Sunday, owners of major taxi companies explained that tariffs would rise gradually and specified that the rates per km had not been updated since 2006 in Sofia.

The new fares and the time of their entry into force are yet to be specified.

Taxi fares have already been increased in the southern cities of Kardzhali and Haskovo.
