Bulgaria: Bulgaria Made Commitments to Chevron, Nationalist Party Says Image by VMRO's press office

Bulgaria's marginal nationalist VMRO party has expressed its outrage with a co-sponsorship contract between Chevron and the Bulgarian Embassy in the US concerning a reception on the occasion of Bulgaria's national day.

Bulgaria has made business engagements to Chevron, VMRO has concluded, stating that Chevron's name has been involved in the "scandalous" situation surrounding shale gas exploration and research in Bulgaria.

"The Donee declares that the ultimate goal of this event is to provide the American investors with an update on the developments in the Bulgarian economy, as well as with a review of business and investment opportunities in Bulgaria today," the sponsorship contract says, as cited by VMRO.

The party has pointed out that it was the Bulgarian side that sought the sponsorship deal.

The sponsorship agreement consists of covering the expenses for renting the hall for the reception, organized by the Bulgarian Embassy on the Bulgarian National Day in Washington on March, 1St.

In the summer of 2011, the Bulgarian cabinet granted the US energy giant a permit to explore for shale gas in a large segment of north-eastern Bulgaria. However, the permit was revoked in January following a wave of protests organized by environmentalists and citizens across the country.

On January 18, the Bulgarian Cabinet imposed an indefinite ban on hydraulic fracturing, a method which involves injecting a mix of water, sand and chemicals at very high pressure deep underground to crack rock and release oil and gas.
