Bulgaria: Bulgarian Irrigation Systems Head Temporarily Removed Photo of Georgi Harizanov by dnevnik.bg

Georgi Harizanov, Chair of the Board of Directors of Bulgaria's state-owned Irrigation Systems, has been temporarily removed from his position due to an investigation that is renewed against him.

Harizanov is accused of stealing USD 50 000 from an office of a Sofia-based company back in 2001. According to the Trud daily, Harizanov is also accused of making a death threat to a woman during a protest against high taxes on motorcycles that he organized.

The decision for Harizanov's temporary removal was made late on Monday by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

On Friday, it emerged that the embattled official has not completed a bachelor's degree and is currently a student, which prompted Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov to defend him, saying "May Harizanov have Bill gates' fate."

The Irrigation Systems company gained media prominence due to the debates surrounding the ownership of dams in Bulgaria.

The issue surfaced after a dam wall collapsed on February 06, causing a deadly flood in the southern Bulgarian village of Biser.
