US Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy Richard Morningstar has arrived in Bulgaria and met Thursday with President, Rosen Plevneliev.
Plevneliev's secretary on external policy, Tihomir Stoichev, and his economic advisor, Evgeni Angelov, also took part in the meeting, the Bulgarian "Dnevnik" daily reports Thursday. There will be a briefing for the media upon the conclusion of the talks.
It is expected that Morningstar will also meet with Economy and Energy Minister, Traicho Traikov, and on Friday – with Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov.
Observers and experts expect that Hillary Clinton's Envoy will try to persuade Bulgarian authorities in the safety of shale gas exploration. During her visit to Sofia Sunday, the US Secretary of State announced the visit, saying the topic of the talks would be "ways to preserve the country's environment all while achieving energy independence."
After his meeting with Clinton, Borisov reiterated that the moratorium on exploration of shale gas by the US company Chevron will be lifted only when Bulgarians become convinced in the safety of the method.
After Clinton's visit, US Ambassador in Sofia, James Warlick, commented that Chevron obviously underestimated fears in Bulgaria and the country cannot be pressured from the outside on the shale gas decision.
