Bulgaria's new President Rosen Plevneliev and the Borisov Cabinet have dismissed the long-time head of the National Intelligence Service, Gen. Kircho Kirov.

Kirov, who has been the head of the Bulgarian intelligence for the past 9 years, has been dismissed together with his deputy Gen. Angelov, Bulgaria's Defense Minister Anyu Angelov announced after the sitting of the Cabinet held in the southern city of Pazardzhik Wednesday.

Two officers from the Bulgarian Intelligence Service, whose names were not revealed on Wednesday, were appointed as Deputy Directors, and one of them will act as an interim Director, Angelov said.

Earlier on Wednesday Bulgaria's new President Rosen Plevneliev declared that a new Director and Deputy Director will be appointed in the country's National Intelligence Service.

"We discussed the candidates, we agreed on them, the Council of Ministers will decide," Plevneliev said after he met with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

Plevneliev believes that Bulgaria should have clear laws that define the work of its intelligence services by the end of 2012.

Speaking after the Cabinet meeting, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov explained that Gen. Kircho Kirov, the outgoing head of the Bulgarian intelligence, will not be appointed as an ambassador because of his record of collaboration with the former State Security, the secret service of the Bulgarian communist regime.

"I spoke to Gen. Kirov since he has been in charge of the intelligence for almost ten years, and it is the right thing to do appoint such people at state jobs for a while – so that they can – simply put – forget the secrets that they know. That's why I've offered him a position as an adviser at the Council of Ministers in the place of Tsvetlin Yovchev," Borisov stated, referring to the former head of Bulgaria's State National Security Agency DANS, who has now become the head of the cabinet of the new Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev.
