The Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, will use the entire parliamentary arsenal to obtain clear answers from Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, on the more and more frequent cases of police brutality.

BSP leader and former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, reiterated Tuesday the left-wing call for Tsvetanov's resignation, but added that a no-confidence vote against the cabinet of the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, could be on the table over the issue.

Over the weekend, Malina and Petar Nachkovi complained of police brutality and reported they have been severely beaten and, with no sound motivation, detained by police, who after that went on to violently break in and search their home.

Three senior police officers were sanctioned with reprimands, despite calls for dismissals from Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov.

Stanishev pointed out that the Interior Minister fails to take into consideration the opinion of the Prime Minister, and imposes a repressive rule where everyone, who opposes GERB, is considered guilty without evidence.

The Socialists voiced outrage about the latest reported case of police brutality – it emerged Tuesday that police in the village of Scravena used electric shock to force confessions from teen boys suspected of painting swastika on the wall of some houses in the village. One of the suspects has a medical report as proof of sustained injuries.

Meanwhile, also on Tuesday, the family, who became victims of alleged police brutality Saturday, announced at a special briefing the establishment of a Civil Committee to deal with the more and more frequent cases of police abuse in Bulgaria.
