Bulgaria: Plevneliev Pledges to Be 'Pragmatic' Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev from the ruling center-right party GERB got sworn in as the President of the Republic of Bulgaria at 10.05 Eastern European Time on Thursday, January 19, 2011. BGNES

Rosen Plevneliev, who was sworn in as Bulgaria's new President on Thursday, vowed to be "the pragmatic President" during the lackluster speech he delivered in the country's Parliament.

Plevneliev's predecessor, Georgi Parvanov, had stated that he wanted to be the "social President."

"I will work for the national interest and for the well-being of all Bulgarians. I am assuming the presidential office in order to solve your problems," Plevneliev declared.

Despite being macroeconomically stable, Bulgaria is still the poorest EU member state, the country's new President pointed out, adding that the nation's whole potential should be mobilized in order to change that.

"The worst deficit a nation could have is the deficit of future. The governments should change, but Bulgaria should not start from scratch every single time," he added.

Bulgaria should become a moderately rich European country with well-developed regions, Plevneliev, a former Regional Development Minister, believes.
