Bulgaria: Bulgaria Looking for Next Saviour, Mk. III - German Analyst Boyko Borisov was elected Bulgaria's prime minister in the summer of 2009 with a big majority and enjoyed the confidence of the people. His approval ratings however have been falling recently. Photo by Sofia Photo Agency

The average Bulgarian voter rarely looks at substance over appearance and is ready to believe the next "saviour", who may already be on his way, a German analyst believes.

"The government in Sofia should take urgent measures in fighting poverty. Recent polls show that 41% of the Bulgarian citizens believe that no one defends their interests," Martin Weiss said, as cited by DPA.

"These people do not approve of the governmental policy, but neither do they feel represented by the anemic opposition. Against this background it will be small wonder if a new savior appears in the short term," Weiss forecast.

According to him Bulgaria's former EU commissioner and failed presidential runner Meglena Kuneva may decide to follow in the footprints of the man that got her into politics and start aggressively marketing herself as the next saviour of the country.

"There is already talk about new parties, to be headed by Meglena Kuneva or outgoing President Georgi Parvanov. The shot to stardom of the former king, of the nationalist Ataka and the ruling GERB showed how fast the shift in voters' sentiments and the rise of new political forces in Bulgaria can be."

In 2001 Borisov served as bodyguard to Bulgaria's former king, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who returned from nearly half a century of exile to run for parliament and become prime minister.

Borisov so impressed the king that he gave him a government job only to see him a few years later replacing him as everybody's favourite.

Right after his election in the summer of 2009 Prime Minister Boyko Borisov enjoyed unprecedentedly high approval rates among Bulgarians, exceeding those of former king Simeon Saxe-Coburg from the times of his much expected and jubilant return to the country in 2001.

His approval ratings however have been falling steadily over the last month.

"It is only natural that even the almighty Boyko Borisov will not remain on top of the game for a very long time from now," Weiss concluded.
