Bulgaria: No Postponement for Mandatory Level Gauges at Bulgarian Filling Stations Photo by tek.bg

Filling station owners will get no postponement for installing the mandatory level gauges, said Rosen Bachvarov, spokesperson of the National Revenue Agency (NRA) on Monday.

Industry representatives have warned that the requirement to mount the equipment by end-March will lead to the forced closure of thousands of filling stations, leaving 4000 workers unemployed.

"We remain open to dialogue on the technical requirements," Bachvarov said, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

"The truth is that fuel trade in Bulgaria is a high-risk sector. This is why the government has adopted a series of measures to regulate it ever since it assumed office. It turned out that the first step uncovered some BGN 24 M in hidden turnover amid falling fuel consumption. I believe that there is a way to avoid social tensions and protests and to ensure compliance with the law that has been in existence for six months.

Consultations between Bulgaria's revenue authorities and protesting owners of filling stations have been scheduled for January 05.
