Prof. Stati Statev was elected on Monday as the new rector of Bulgaria's University of National and World Economy (UNWE).

A total of 218 members of the university's governing body voted for Statev, while the other candidate, Prof. Plamen Mishev, received 81 votes.

Statev used to be UNWE's deputy rector. The university's former rector, Borislav Borisov, finished his second and last term in office and is not allowed to run for reelection.

The new rector's main aims include keeping the high rating of the higher education institution and improving its scientific research.

Sofia's University of National and World Economy is the largest and oldest higher education institution for economy in Bulgaria and has a history of 90 years.
