The construction of the Bulgaria-Turkey gas grid interconnection may start within a year, according to Traicho Traikov, Bulgarian Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism.

Traikov's statement on Tuesday marked the opening of the 22nd meeting of the Energy Charter Conference held in Sofia.

The Energy Minister called for a prompt opening of the Southern Gas Corridor to Europe, reminding that Bulgaria is a participant-country in the Nabucco gas pipeline projet, as well as in a number of other smaller-scale projects like the gas grid interconnections with Greece and Turkey.

He also noted that Bulgaria's goal was to disallow suppliers controlling a share of over 50% in gas deliveries by 2020.

Traikov refused to comment on the fate of the Belene NPP project, saying that "Nothing is settled until everything is settled. And everything is not settled."

He further assured journalists that Bulgaria's energy future would unfold in corredpondence with all contemporary trends in the sphere of energy market regulations, the full use of energy resources and energy efficiency, which he said were the main goals in Strategy 2020.

The Minister declined to respond to a question about the economic impact of potential blockades by protesting Bulgarian farmers.

The Energy Charter Treaty and the Energy Charter Protocol on Energy Efficiency and Related Environmental Aspects were signed in December 1994 and entered into legal force in April 1998.

To date, the Treaty has been signed or acceded to by fifty-one states, the European Community and Euratom (the total number of its members is therefore fifty-three).

The fundamental aim of the Energy Charter Treaty is to strengthen the rule of law on energy issues, by creating a level playing field of rules to be observed by all participating governments, thereby mitigating risks associated with energy-related investment and trade.
