Shell Bulgaria has sought competition clearance for taking control of two sites of the Litex filling station chain.

The Bulgarian unit of the Anglo-Dutch energy giant has already sent a notification to the Commission on Protection of Competition (KZK).

At present, Shell Bulgaria has a total of 111 filling stations in the country, 30 of which were leased from Litex in 1998 for a period of 25 years.

At that point, Litex controlled the biggest private filling station chain in Bulgaria, Capital Daily reported on Monday.

Litex now runs four petrol stations (two in Sofia, one in Plovdiv and one in Lovetch) and two methane stations (one in Plovdiv and one in Lovetch), according to the company's website.

Shell opened its first site in 1993 and currently holds a15% retail fuel market share.

In mid-November it was reported that Russian Gazprom Neft was preparing to set foot on the local fuel retail market via its Serbian unit, Naftna Industrija Srbije.

On November 16, KZK opened proceedings on a request of Gazprom's Serbian unit for purchasing 7 filling stations currently owned by sole traders and two natural persons.

The deal is to be sealed through NIS Petrol, a division of Naftna Industrija Srbije.

Approached for comment, Shell Bulgaria has denied any connection between the step it seeks to make and the emerging competition in the face of Gazprom.
