Mass Exodus of Brits Looms for Bulgaria: Mass Exodus of Brits Looms for Bulgaria According to a recent study of the British, Rightmoveoverseas.co.uk, the interest of UK citizens to property in Bulgaria has dropped by 64% for the period July 2008 - July 2010. Photo by BGNES

British citizens are selling their Bulgarian coastal properties and are leaving the country.

The news was reported Saturday by the Bulgarian TV channel  bTV, saying that every other British-owned house in the village of Avren, near the northern Black Sea shore of Bulgaria, until now considered a paradise for foreigners, is listed for sale.

The Brits first came in large numbers to the village, which is located about 40 km from the Black Sea capital Varna, in 2003. They purchased houses then as investment, in order to resell them at higher prices after the country's EU accession. However, some 70 Brits later became permanent residents of Avren. The last wave happened four years ago.

bTV cite a British woman, who arrived with this last wave, saying she came for the money because she did not want to be doomed to poverty in England over her miserable State pension.

"With this money here, I can really enjoy life – I furnished a beautiful home with a splendid view; I can go the restaurant whenever I want," the woman explains, but adds she is disappointed and dissatisfied by the bad condition of the streets in the village. She further points out that her fellow country people, especially younger ones without a stable income, have left over the crisis after they realized expectations for profits from the property would not materialize.

Local real estate brokers report that most of the houses are mortgaged and owners now cannot make regular payments on the loans.

Others are leaving over the constantly increasing crime rate with many houses being robbed and the police failing to protect their owners.

The Mayor of Avren vowed before bTV that the local authorities will focus on improving both infrastructure and safety.

People from Avren hope that British owners will be replaced by Russian ones.

Steve140,

I'm assuming that you hired an 'independent' Bulgarian lawyer! You should have every right to claim against this lawyer if he/she has not performed their service correctly!

Harley,

I must say your English grammer/spelling is very very good and so is your knowlege of the UK and its expensive and less expensive areas to live, which leads me to believe that you must at some point have spent a considerable amount of time in the UK or do in fact live in the UK now! You should therefore know that the 'filthy island' as you call it is actually very clean with good infrastructure and well maintained roads! I also doubt very much that you are actually Bulgarian but wherever you're from you're a xenophobic idiot!

I suspect the reason that some British are leaving is because of a complete lack of research before buying/moving to Bulgaria, which at the end of the day is their own fault...

"Descent Russians stay in Russia. They have no money to invest anywhere".
Utmost profound idea...But leaving aside the notorious 'Russian oligarchs', i.e.
the real thieves & criminals who impudently robbed Russia & then found the Eden
for their dirty money & the exile for their dirty souls (as 'political opponents to the
regime, sure) in Britain, USA & other "inflexibly democratic' powers, so, leaving aside
this authentic human SCRAP & its Protectors (familiar souls, You know), I'd like to
precise that today quite a large strata of Russians earns enough for buying real
estate & investing into Bulgaria with its cognate language, friendly & tranquil people,
nice climate.....

can you also point this out to your british investors
This is why I have started an online e petition regarding property in Bulgaria. Bulgaria property law is complex and you do not expect to be ripped off from a fellow brit I have heard from people that have invested in Bulgaria they buy the house pay for it receive the docs and then the same brit that sold it to them took their money then sells the property to yet another brit couple one has the deeds and the other has a prelim contract.
One guy bought a house thinking that it was his way off leaving it to his daughter as a future asset little did he know when he bought the house from the brit paid is money and then he found out that the guy did not even own the house it was auctioned off by the government and he lost every penny.
A lady bought her house and she was harassed and due to the pressure put on her she returned to the UK and yes her house has been sold again.
One couple bought a property there was no gas or electric on but the house mysteriously got torched to the ground.
This is just a few off the problems that the brits have faced with buying property from the same guy and company.
How would you feel if this was done to you in the UK there would be a public outcry
Hence the petition to put pressure on the Bulgarian government to change the law regarding property and to get all property agents registered in Bulgaria please can you ask your friends to sign my petition and post it to their face books and other social networks.
The most important thing to do is to confirm the email you get once you have signed it if you don’t confirm the email your vote will not count.

harly i like many others was conned by a brit my intentions was to move to bg as i have been visiting that country for the last 15 years and in that time sunny beach was just a row of huts where do you think the money came from to develop the area the brits and other tourists.

in them days there was no traffic lights etc.

my plan was to open www.theoldcoachhousebulgaria.co.uk into a bar restaurant and small hotel and yes employing local bulgarians to work there but like many others have been stung not by bulgarians but by our own.

and my online petition is aimed to the brits who have a uk postal addy as you have to have a uk addy to sign it.

I think any expat before buying property should make sure he can buy the way of living in the new country and this is not just for Bulgaria. He has to learn the language, adopt the rules and non-rules of the new society and be accepted by his new neighbors. On the other hand a country that seeks investments in Real estate and buyers from other countries should protect the newcomers from various hijackers that exist in all countries and target foreigners.
We in Greece have some very bad examples on Brits but also some excellent ones like in any other placen not a big issue. But if mass exodus of Brits from Varna is indeed reality then I think is a problem and I doubt is due to the Brits really.

Yes, I can afford Sevenoaks. In fact I live not that far from there. No, I am not blue collar. So, again you have failed in your one sided opinion. It is obvious that there are some no good British, and Bulgarians too. You should hear some of the things people say about Bulgarians in England - obviously through ignorance and generalisation - same as you are doing now.
You say I did not do anything for Society, but that is not my task. I did exactly what I needed to do - which is to treat people with respect and spend my money. No, the amount I spent alone would not make much difference, but thousands of people spending the same each year does make a big difference. You say good riddance to me, but I have not left! That is what I do - I invest money in property - not just in Bulgaria. I still have my place in Bulgaria and I am very happy with it and I have made many friends too, both Russians and Bulgarians. Maybe this makes you jealous.
You seem to have a very personal grudge against the British - I wonder what happened to you why you have to hate the British so much.

This last posting proves my point. These retarded Brits move to this country and start with their online petitions, their silly complaints and want everything to be the same as in their filthy island. Their condescending attitude is disgraceful. They act like if they are the enlightened conquerors teaching the stupid natives how things should be. You lost your empire a long time ago, get in your head. Instead of starting online petitions here and other typical anglo crap go back to your filth and put the place in order. As far as I can see, your country has much greater problems than Bulgaria. You are basically bankrupt, most of your population is made out of rioting thieves, you have the 2nd highest rate of obesity in the world, your living standards are declining faster than a speeding bullet and your food is just plain NASTY!

Get lost, this is BULGARIA, and we do things our way. If you don't like it pack up like your idiotic compatriots are doing.

“Russians have a high favorability rating (88%) in Bulgaria because they are overwhelmingly decent, family oriented people who come looking for a better life here and contribute to society. They learn Bulgarian, follow similar cultural traditions and invest in villages, beach and mountain resorts.”

Harley (or whoever)

What a load of crap.
Decent Russians stay in Russia. They have no money to invest anywhere. Those who have money to invest go to America where they can make more money rather than go to BG and invest in Gorno Nanadolno ...

Harley - 29 Nov 2011 // 14:14:52

No mat, the Bulgarians do not like the Russians because they like the voice of their masters or any other nonsense of the sort. Russians have a high favorability rating (88%) in Bulgaria because they are overwhelmingly decent, family oriented people who come looking for a better life here and contribute to society. They learn Bulgarian, follow similar cultural traditions and invest in villages, beach and mountain resorts. Who wouldn't be happy with these type of migrants. With the British you get all negatives plus a nasty, know-it all condescending attitude towards Bulgarians and other Eastern European people. So it comes with great satisfaction to see that you philistines are packing your bags and that our Russian cousins are moving in the thousands. Ciao Brits!

Mat - 29 Nov 2011 // 11:39:04

Of course the Bulgarians prefer the Russians - they are used to the sound of their master's voice.

Oh, this xenophobia isn't so hard!

Now stop feeding the troll and it will go away
