Croatian Ruling Party Triumphs in Elections, Tough Negotiations Ahead
In a widely expected outcome, Croatia's ruling conservative party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), emerged victorious in the parliamentary elections
The Bulgarian Socialist Party has a good standing to win upcoming 2013 parliamentary elections, said leader Sergey Stanishev at a press conference on presidential and local elections that were held in Bulgaria end of October.
At the elections, the opposition Socialists' candidate Ivaylo Kalfin remained second, losing with 47% at the second round run off against ruling center-right GERB candidate Rosen Plevneliev, the erstwhile popular Minister of Regional Development.
In the municipal elections, BSP did not show very convincing results, with GERB again coming first, winning some 38% of the vote, and 12 of Bulgaria's 27 regional center cities.
At the Saturday press conference, leader Stanishev emphasized that socialist candidate Kalfin gathered some 600,000 votes more that what the Socialist Party did in the last general elections in 2009.
"Our party has a good chance to win the parliamentary elections in 2013," said Stanishev, adding "I will not let personal rivalries ruin that opportunity."
He was referring to outgoing Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov's intention to return to the Socialist Party once his term in office expires in January 2012.
Before his first term in office as President, Parvanov chaired BSP, to be succeeded by Stanishev in 2002.
Now, some speculate, Parvanov is bent on ousting Stanishev from the position, after his perceived unconvincing showing as Bulgaria's PM 2005-9, and as the party's leader in opposition.
During a press conference Friday, the outgoing Bulgarian President said he will return to the Socialist Party, taking "the very back seat."
Saturday Stanishev replied that Parvanov "is welcome to sit in the front rows," but assured he has no intentions to step down and will run for re-election as party leader in 2012.
