Georgi Parvanov, Bulgaria's outgoing President, has confirmed that he will return to the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) after the end of his second and last term in office.

During a press conference on which he commented on the outcome of the recent local elections, as well as a number of other present-day issues, Parvanov vowed to help the leftist from which he started his political career.

He added that he would "give people the chance to vote for him in the next parliamentary elections," without revealing whether he wanted to become the party's chairman once again, dnevnik.bg informs. Currently, the left-wing formation is headed by former PM Sergey Stanishev (2005-2009).

However, the outgoing President did state that a change is necessary in the Bulgarian Socialist Party. The choice of BSP's chairman depends on the nominations which are to be endorsed by the organizations within the party, he reminded.

Parvanov pointed out that it was other BSP members that endorsed him for chairman of the party back in 1996 and for President in 2001.

The outgoing President further revealed that he does not consider running for MP during the parliamentary elections in 2013. As for the presidential and local elections which took place at the end of October, Parvanov expressed his disappointment at the party's results, claiming that it failed to prove it was a formidable alternative to the governing GERB.

Parvanov also declared that ruling centrist-right GERB's President-Elect Rosen Plevneliev has a good legacy left to him.
