Bulgaria is about to auction off a second stretch of its Black Sea shelf for deepwater oil and gas drilling.

The Bulgarian government has given the green light to the launch of a tender for awarding an oil and gas drilling permit in Bloc 1-19 St Atanas near Varna.

According to unconfirmed reports, Austrian OMV is among the companies interested in winning the deepwater permit as it has already carried out exploratory activities in the region.

Other sources cite US Chevron as a potential participant in the tender.

In end-May, US energy giant Chevron won a shale gas drilling permit in Novi Pazar, Northeast Bulgaria, with a EUR 30 M bid.

Bloc 1-19 St Atanas spans a total of 1318 sq km and the winner the tender will obtain deepwater drilling rights for five years.

The tendering process will take at least one year because the tender announcement will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

In end-January, Lederbel BG won a five-year permit for deepwater drilling in the Silistar bloc, an area of 6940 sq km located near the country's southern Black Sea coast.
