Bulgaria: Sofia's Reelected Mayor Vows Not to Increase Taxes On October 23, Fandakova, who is endorsed by Bulgaria's ruling centrist-right GERB party, won the capital's election by gathering approximately 53% of the votes.

No tax increase has been considered for the citizens of Bulgaria's capital Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, who was recently reelected as the city's mayor, declared on Wednesday.

"We rely on strict financial discipline and spending cuts, with our main aim being not to raise taxes next year," Fandakova explained on Wednesday, as cited by the Dnevnik daily.

However, Fandakova revealed that an altering would take place concerning the capital's zoning. Fandakova explained that she would present a new zoning project.

In March, the Sofia Municipal Council it canceled its controversial decision to alter Sofia's zoning, which had triggered an outrage stirred by a recent increase of property taxes. The scandal began when taxes for many of Sofia's residents went up without warning after the capital's zoning was altered.

The decision on Sofia's zoning, as well as other crucial projects for the city, was postponed until after the election.

On October 23, Fandakova, who is endorsed by Bulgaria's ruling centrist-right GERB party, won the capital's election by gathering approximately 53% of the votes.
