Lack of Quorum Foils Work of Bulgarian Parliament for 2nd Day: Work of Bulgarian MPs Foils for 2nd Day over Lack of Quorum Only 92 Bulgarian MPs showed up Friday, which foiled the work of the Parliament for the second day in a row over the lack of quorum. File photo

The Members of the Bulgarian Parliament failed for the second day in a row to appear in plenary hall in numbers strong enough to have quorum.

At 9 am Friday, when the session was scheduled to begin, there were 84 MPs inside the Parliament.

In order to hold a session, 121 MPs (out of a total of 240) must be present.

The Speaker of the Parliament, Tsetska Tsacheva, gave a 15-minute break. At second count, there were 92 MPs, thus the work of the Parliament was botched for the second time in the last two days.

Fridays are dedicated to the so-called parliamentary control when members of the cabinet appear to answer questions from MPs. Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, was scheduled to give explanations on the government's policy towards Bulgarian citizens living in the border region of Serbia, close to Bulgaria (Djankov is also in charge of Bulgarians abroad), while Regional Minister, Lilyana Pavlova – on the number of newly registered voters on the grounds of their permanent address.

Tsacheva voiced disappointment, saying she hoped that at least half of the MPs would show up. She explains the lack of quorum with the Sunday runoff of the presidential and local elections.
