Ancient Romans were building roads before constructing towns, Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov pointed out in the country's parliament Friday, defending his cabinet's decision to set high priorities on infrastructure projects.

"Asphalt is not edible per se, but it brings food to people: even Romans built roads first and then towns," Borisov said in his answer to Korneliya Ninova, one of the oppositional left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party's most vocal lawmakers.

Ninova had stated that major infrastructure projects are being financed with money from the Bulgarian state budget instead of European funds.

"You cannot understand what the people in Brussels are saying, because EU projects were frozen during your government's rule," Borisov said, referring to the country's former three-way coalition led by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (2005-2009).

According to the Bulgarian Prime Minister, the former cabinet spent billions on projects GERB does not approve of, which has rendered the current government incapable of  providing the money necessary for increasing people's incomes.
