Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" has named a lecture hall after legendary Bulgarian philosopher Isaac Passy at a special ceremony.

The newly named "Isaac Passy Auditorium" is part of the Philosophy Department where Prof. Passy himself taught.

The decision of the academic council of Sofia University's faculty to name an auditorium after the late philosopher is a major exception from the institution's policy, and is seen as recognition of Isaac Passy's contribution to the education of generations of talented Bulgarian students.

One of Bulgaria's most renowned scholars, philosopher and specialist in aesthetics Isaac Passy, died in August 2010 at the age of 82.

Isaac Passy, born in 1928 in the city of Plovdiv, is widely viewed a legend in philosophy in Bulgaria. As a professor of aesthetics, philosophy, and cultural studies, he taught at the Philosophy Department of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski since receiving his Ph. D. there in 1957 until 1993 when he retired in protest against a controversial decommunization law.

His works have achieved iconic status for Bulgarian scholars and intellectuals, and he has been described as one of the last "Renaissance figures" in Bulgaria for his wide erudition and philosophical acumen.

Isaac Passy is the author of over 30 scholarly works such as "The Tragic" (1963), "The Comic" (1972), "The Aesthetics of Kant" (1976), "German Classical Aesthetics" (1982), "The Metaphor" (1983), "Friedrich Nietzsche" (1996), "Arthur Schopenhauer" (1998), "Contemporary Spanish Philosophy" (1999), "Russian Thinkers" (2000), "Biography of Spirit" (2000), among others. His works blazed pioneer paths in Bulgarian philosophy.

Isaac Passy is also famous for his essays and philosophical miniatures in "Philosophical Literary Etudes" (1968), "French Moralists" (1978), "Essays" (1981), "Problem, People, Memories" (1992), "Thinkers and Thoughts" (1994), "Philosophy Miniatures and Fragments" (2000), "Motives of Human Behavior (2002), among others.

His polymathy notwitstanding, his studies put an emphasis on the great age of classical German idealism, pre-existentialism, Russian thought and the essay as a genre.

Not less significant is the other part of Prof. Passy's legacy - that of introducing classical phosophical texts  to the Bulgarian public. Passy organized the translation and edited over 80 volumes of works from the philosophical and aesthetics canon dating from the Antiquity to the 20th century.

Passy was a lively and active figure in Bulgarian academic circles well into his late years. An unforgettable teacher, his lectures attracted literally hundreds, from diverse fields of study at the university.

Prof. Isaac Passy is the father of Bulgaria's former Foreign Minister Solomon Passy (in office 2001-2005).
