New Environment Minister Dolores Arsenova told journalists Thursday she will meet with Romanian counterpart Aurel Ilie as soon as possible to discuss measures to prevent crossborder pollution of Bulgarian Danubian towns Rousse and Silistra from Romanian plants. Arsenova said she has already spoken with Romanian Ambassador here Constantin-Mihail Grigorie who will intermediate in arranging the meeting. Bulgaria`s air pollution standards are higher than those of Romania and this accounts for the discrepancies between the pollution reports of the two countries, Arsenova said. The environmental problems of Rousse and Silistra are long-standing. The crossborder pollution of Rousse by a Romanian plant on the opposite bank of the Danube resulted in the formation of the first opposition movements towards the end of the communist regime in Bulgaria. Hydrogen sulphide and phenol concentrations above the permissible norms have been registered in Silistra in the past 10 years. The issue has been discussed on numerous occasions by the two countries` environment ministers.
