Bulgarian football legend Hristo Stoichkov will join a campaign against the existing job restrictions for Bulgarian workers in the EU.

Stoichkov, Bulgarian Social Affairs Minister Totyu Mladenov and MEP Iliana Ivanova will launch the campaign Sunday before a friendly football game the former Barcelona striker is scheduled to play in.

Currently, ten EU member states have kept job restrictions on citizens of the Bulgaria and Romania: The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Austria, the UK and Malta.

As of July 1, The Netherlands will only allow Bulgarian and Romanian workers on its labor market in "exceptional cases".

Earlier on Friday, it was announced that the governments of Bulgaria and neighboring Romania have sent a letter asking the European Commission to help convince older member states to lift restrictions for job-seekers from the two countries as of 2012.

Hristo Stoichkov was recently appointed honorary Consul in Barcelona by Bulgarian Prime Minister and a friend of his, Boyko Borisov. Borisov recently denied allegations that he might endorse the famous forward for President.
