The governments of Bulgaria and Israel have signed three major cooperation agreements after holding an unprecedented joint sitting in Sofia on Thursday.

The bilateral agreements provide for cooperation in agriculture, natural gas supplies for Bulgaria from large-scale Israeli deposits, and for the mutual protection of investments.

"We wish to increase the Israeli investments in Bulgaria. I am not sure if the Israeli business community has discovered Bulgaria yet, and this is my personal mission – to introduce to them the opportunities that Bulgaria offers," Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared during his joint news conference with his Bulgarian counterpart Boyko Borisov.

He described Bulgaria as a potential door for Israel to the European markets that can provide great benefits to both Israeli business and the Bulgarian society and economy.

Borisov in turn emphasized that Bulgaria aims at attracting Israeli investments in several priority sectors, especially the water supply infrastructure and the construction of water reservoirs and irrigation systems.

"As Minister Plevneliev says, Bulgaria is the European Champion in wasting water, while Israel is the world champion in utilizing each drop of water," the Bulgarian PM said citing Regional Development Minister Rosen Plevneliev.

He further elaborated on his idea for the creation of a joint food reserve because the worsening global food situation will make food reserves priceless.

"We have enormous oil reserves – these are our fertile lands. I rely on the two agriculture ministers who met yesterday to work fast for the creation of this food reserve," Borisov stated.

During his visit to Israel in 2010, Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov announced that Israeli firms wanted to purchase massive agricultural land plots from the Bulgarian State Land Fund.

"I am very impressed with what I saw in Bulgaria – very energetic ministers and a very energetic prime minister, Netanyahu said in turn.
