The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been remarkably slow in helping Bulgarian writer Dimiter Kenarov be freed after he was arrested for lack of documents in Belarus.

Kenarov was detained in Mazyr Wednesday after a visit to a local tractor factory together with a friend from the USA. Police discovered Kenarov had lost his travel documents and detained him with his friend, who was released soon after.

In spite of the urgings of Kenarov's relatives to the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it appears that a temporary passport was sent to the young man only Saturday morning.

According to the latest info, he will travel to Bulgaria only Monday, and will be extradited to the Belarusian border under police convoy.

It is unclear why the Bulgarian citizen will stay in arrest when he already has the documents needed, nor why he was not taken to the Bulgarian embassy in Belarus.

The reasons for the extradition are also unclear, as is the question whether Kenarov will be accompanied by a Bulgarian diplomatic representative in Belarus.

Dimiter Kenarov, 30, has published travel prose in editions such as The Nation, Esquire, Boston Review, New English Review, among others.

In Bulgaria he has two collections of short poetry issued, including the critically acclaimed "Apocryphal Animals".
