The Dilemma of the Bulgarian Scientists

"Should I eat this month or should I pay my central heating bill?" is a question that many Bulgarian scientists have probably asked themselves.

Despite all the political talk that science and education are among the government's "top priorities", a mere 0.28% of the country's GDP is spent on research and development, according to the newest data for 2010.

Facing severe austerity measures, many young researchers decided not to work for EUR 200 a month and fled the embattled Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – many fled the country.

While the sheer physical survival of the Bulgarian scientists is not a question that would interest everyone, the economic effects of the drastic underfunding for the country are quite clear.

Alas, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, who recently advised university students to become shepherds if they cannot find other jobs, continues to ignore that.
