The efforts of the Bulgarian government against human trafficking are still inadequate but improving, according to the annual US State Department report on the subject.
"The Government of Bulgaria does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so," reads the document for 2011.
The report points out a number of mechanisms implemented in Bulgaria that improve tracking down perpetrators and easing the life of returned victims of traffic.
At the same time it mentions bureaucratic hurdles as a chief problem in the field.
The Department of State document optimistically recommends to the Bulgarian government to persist and deepen its efforts, and in particular to investigate and punish implication of civil servants in trafficking.
Another recommendation of note is an improvement in the level of integration and living conditions of the Roma minority, a frequent source of traffic victims.
