Bulgarian Members of the Parliament rejected for the third time Wednesday the appointment of the leader of the far-right, nationalist Ataka party, Volen Siderov, as member of the Parliamentary anti-Corruption Committee.
The move means that Siderov would not be able to become the rotational Chair of the Committee as well.
On June 8, MPs unanimously voted against Siderov becoming the Committee's Head over the incident in front of a downtown Sofia mosque where Ataka members and followers entered in a bloody altercation with praying Muslims. After the second negative vote last week, the Ataka MPs decided to halt all their membership in all Parliamentary Committees until the issue is resolved.
"The election of Siderov as a member of the anti-Corruption Committee is a matter of Parliamentary Code, not voting. This is a crucial Committee, focusing on citizens' complaints and its work is now blocked for over three weeks over partisan wars. And we would not propose another member," Ataka MP, Pavel Shopov, commented.
Last week, Siderov saw an alleged interference of US Ambassador in Sofia, James Warlick, in his rejection by the Parliament.
"We are witnessing now actions of the MPs from the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party, revealing the interference of this person. Do you remember how a while ago Warlick threatened to destroy me?" the nationalist leader stated.
