Daniel Vulchev, Former Bulgarian Education Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, has termed Simeon Saxe-Coburg, former Bulgarian Tsar and Prime Minister, the best presidential candidate.

In a Monday interview for the morning broadcast of Nova TV, Vulchev, who is part of the initiative committee supporting ex EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva at the autumn 2011 presidential elections, added that Saxe-Coburg had fallen victim to a two-year long smear campaign, which was typical for "these geographical latitudes".

In his words, however, the National Movement for Stability and Prosperity (NSMP), which was founded by the former Tsar, is convinced he is a very strong candidate, "if nothing else, because he was raised to be a head of state ".

The former Education Minister went on to define Kuneva as a powerful contender, explaining that she had fought her way to the top through her perseverance, her education and her qualities.

Meglena Kuneva, who was introduced to the Bulgarian political scene by the NSMP, a member of the three-way government (2005-2009), was elected Bulgaria's first EU Commissioner for Consumer Protection. Before that, she was Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister, chief negotiator on Bulgaria's EU accession and Bulgarian Minister of EU Affairs.

"She has not come to reap unearned profits", Vulchev insisted, commenting on Kuneva's entry into the presidential race.

He stressed Kuneva's excellent reputation abroad, her in-depth knowledge of EU and international affairs, her connections with global leaders and her language skills as her major strong points.

Vulchev rejected allegations that Kuneva was a candidate of the former three-way coalition and that she was not a sole player but a "spare wheel of Saxe-Coburg".

Reiterating that the ex EU Commissioner would not seek support from any political party, he expressed his belief that she would garner broader support than any political formation.

Vulchev said that Bulgaria's former EU Commissioner had not delayed the announcement of her candidacy, concluding that she was "the first normal presidential candidate presenting their candidacy".
