Beloved Bulgarian actor Stefan Danailov has stated he has no intentions whatsoever to run as candidate for the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party in the presidential elections in the fall.
Speaking to the Standart daily, Danailov, who has been named as one of the most likely Socialist candidates this far, confessed he is exasperated by the pressure heaped upon him to accept the candidacy.
Stefan Danailov, 68, has been a long-term supporter and functionary of the Bulgarian Socialist Party. He served as Bulgaria's Minister of Culture in the cabinet of BSP leader Sergey Stanishev (2005-9). Danailov is currently a MP in the BSP parliamentary group.
In his Standart interview however, he puts every effort to dispell the impression that he is in any way willing to run for president.
Danailov said that he is flattered by the support people are giving him, but that this is not enough to make him run.
"I cannot but be happy at that support, but make no mistake - people sympathize with the actor Stefan Danailov, not with the politician," said the socialist.
Danailov further expressed disappointment with party pressure on him on the part of party leadership - including Stanishev - not to reveal his decision, in order not to demotivate voters.
"I might as well hide somewhere or leave Bulgaria for the summer because of all those questions and insinuations," commented he.
