BULGARIAN LEADERS DISCUSS MACEDONIA

The situation in the region, and more specifically in Macedonia, was the topic of a meeting between President Peter Stoyanov, Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg, Minister of Defence Nokolai Svinarov, Foreign Minister Solomon Passy, and the Minister of Internal Affairs Georgi Petkanov on Friday. The chiefs of the special services, Generals Dimo Gyaurov, Atanas Atanasov, and Angel Katsarov, were also present at the meeting. Stoyanov pointed out that the meeting had not been prompted by a specific reason that could create alarm in Bulgarian society. `Bulgaria must behave in a calmer and more moderate manner, without any excessive dramatic character`, Passy said, adding that Bulgaria has a very active role and is working in very close synchronization with NATO, the EU, and the international institutions. According to him the country cannot be a mediator in a conflict in which it has not been invited to serve as one. He shared Stoyanov`s position that the arguments of the Macedonian president must be heard again in a more careful manner.
