Bulgaria's Deputy Minister of Social Policy and Labor, Krasimir Popov, has been released from his post, Minister, Totyu Mladenov, announced Thursday at an emergency press conference.
Popov was in charge of the European projects of the Ministry, the operational "Development of Human Resources" program and labor market policies. He was also monitoring the activities of the Employment Agency and the "Beautiful Bulgaria" program.
Mladenov explained the decision to release Popov was made over the Minister's report on the absorption of funds from the EU "Human Resources" program and has been coordinated with Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov. The slow absorption of EU funds and their delayed payments is stated as the main reason for the move.
"There is also a need of better control of the Employment Agency and the Labor Bureaus," the Minister pointed out.
Popov is a long-time employee of the Ministry; he worked there long before becoming Deputy Minister as Director of the EU Funds, International Projects and Programs Directorate.
Popov will be replaced by Deyana Kostadinova, whose last job was the PM's Advisor on Legal Issues and Social Policy. From 2007 until 2009, Kostadinova has been a Department Head at the Regional Policy Ministry.
The latest reshuffle comes on the heels of several recent dismissals – of Transport Minister, Aleksander Tsvetkov, the Deputy Energy Minister, Mariy Kosev, the leadership of Sofia's Traffic Police, of the Patent Agency, the National Assessment and Accreditation Agency, and the Director of the National Social Security Institute (NOI), Hristina Mitreva.
