Bulgaria: DPS Nominates Elena Yoncheva for MEP
The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in Blagoevgrad has nominated Elena Yoncheva as a candidate for the European Parliament, sparking intense debate and speculation
The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) are prepared for the option of holding early elections together with the presidential and local elections scheduled for autumn 2011.
The two opposition parties, however, failed to come up with a unified stance on the reason for the no-confidence vote after the first round of consultations.
The left-wing party came to the Wednesday meeting with plans to suggest the malfunctioning economic and social policy as a reason for the no-confidence motion, while DPS had said Tuesday that it would seek to oust the government on the grounds of its "overall failure".
"Both parties agree that the Cabinet has long deserved a no-confidence vote for its overall policy. There is no question about it", announced DPS MP Lyutvi Mestan.
The Cabinet will most probably face a no-confidence motion over its failure in a concrete sector in June. If this attempt misfires, the Cabinet will undergo a no-confidence vote on the grounds of a total failure in July.
Both opposition parties have agreed that the procedures are aimed at toppling the government.
"The Cabinet has run out of options, it can not handle the crisis, it lacks a European vision and is veering towards autocracy", explained BSP leader Sergey Stanishev.
"It will be a great honor and a great pleasure for me to answer all criticism if this vote is tabled. I will cite concrete examples of what the situation was like in the past and what it is now", Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov commented.
The opposition is expected to table the no-confidence motion next week after a second round of consultations.
