Bulgaria: Bulgaria 2nd Most Peaceful Country in Balkans

Bulgaria has been ranked 53 out of 153 countries in the Vision of Humanity organization's newly published Global Peace Index.

Bulgaria is one place behind Zambia and one ahead of Namibia. Within the Balkan peninsula, it is second only to Romania, which is 40th. The overall list is topped by Iceland, followed by New Zealand and Japan. Sudan, Iraq and Somalia are ranked at the bottom.

Germany is 15th, The UK is 26th, France is 36th, China is 80th, the US is 82nd. And Russia is 147th.

The GPI, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, is the world's leading measure of global peacefulness. It gauges ongoing domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society, and militarisation in 153 countries by taking into account 23 separate indicators.

The 2011 Index dramatically reflects the impact on national rankings of the Arab Spring. Libya (143) saw the most significant drop – falling 83 places; Bahrain (123) dropped by 51 places – the second largest margin; while Egypt (73) dropped 24 places.

While the overall level of peacefulness was down, this year's data did show increased peacefulness in some areas – most notably levels of military expenditure as a % of GDP and relations between neighboring states, according to the report.
