The Bulgarian society must declare itself firmly against any violence, rather than mull whether Friday's clashes between nationalists and praying Muslims in Sofia were some arranged scenario, President Georgi Parvanov said.
He sought to shift the focus from any interpretations that the incident on Friday, in which the nationalist Ataka party assaulted praying Muslims in the Banya Bashi mosque, were the result of a conspiracy. The Ataka party staged a protest against the loudspeakers of the mosque during the Friday prayer.
"I wonder what is a political party doing at a religious ritual, obviously with provocative intentions. I am not going to give the government advice, they are the people who have information who organized, provoked, and allowed this event," Parvanov said in Stara Zagora on Saturday.
"This is a very bad sign because the religious tensions are a very dangerous scenario for Bulgaria, and also in international terms because such photos of clashes are the desired ones by international press agencies," the President stated.
He said he could summon the National Security Council, which includes key officials and political party leaders, if the government asks for that but that such a move must be made very carefully because it could be a catalyst for violence, apparently because both Ataka and the ethnic Turkish party DPS are represented in the council.
