The verbal attacks between Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov and Bulgarian Socialist Party MP and former Interior Minister Rumen Petkov escalated to new extremes Friday.

On May 17, Tsvetanov condemned the aggression against US Ambassador to Bulgaria James Warlick on part of Volen Siderov, leader of the nationalist party "Ataka", and BSP MP Rumen Petkov, calling the latter "trash".

In an interview for state TV channel BNT, Tsvetanov suggested that Petkov take a breath analyzer test before making public appearances to ascertain his emotional condition and to prevent overexcitement on certain programs.

Petkov responded Friday with "There is no problem with me taking a breath analyzer test. If you happen to find a stupid-meter, however, do not test Tsvetanov, unless you want the device broken".

Two days ago, the socialist MP rejected allegations that he had urinated in a fountain. The accusation came from a wire by former US Ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle published on WikiLeaks .

The cable further said Petkov had past associations with controversial figures which may have made it difficult for him to move against certain organized crime interests. Petkov had also long been publicly associated with Russians who are either directly or indirectly affiliated with Russian intelligence, according to Beyrle.

In the past months, Petkov and current US Ambassador James Warlick have engaged in a furious war of words that flared after the US envoy alleged the Socialist's visa was withdrawn on grounds of an investigation carried out against him, but refused to specify the details.
