The head of Bulgaria's Social Security Institute (NOI) Hristina Mitreva has submitted her resignation despite her firm determination to remain at the post.

The news was broken on Tuesday by Valentin Nikolov, deputy chairman of the parliamentary group of the ruling party GERB.

"Mitreva stated at the meeting of the parliamentary group that she has always acted professionally. GERB thanked her for her job and and wished her all the best," he said.

A new player with new, fresh ideas will give new impetus to the social security field, commented members of parliament from GERB.

They said Mitreva was very concise and very upset. She was not willing to discuss with them the reasons for leaving, but made it clear she is not ashamed of anything she has done.

Members of parliament from the ruling party refused to officially comment on the situation and take a stand whether there are grounds for changing the manager of the Institute and what role the finance minister has played.

Some, however, implied that Mitreva was not to blame for the current tension.

Mitreva refused to make any comments on her resignation when approached by journalists.

Last week Bulgaria's prime minister surprisingly threatened to kick out of office the head of the country's Social Security Institute (NOI) Hristina Mitreva, saying she will soon be sent into retirement.

The announcement followed allegations of delay in the pensions granted to orphans who are having their proms this year, which subsequently proved to be false.

Meanwhile the head of the revenues agency Krassimir Stefanov accused Mitreva of swelling the budget deficit by forecasting unrealistically high levels of revenues from social securities.

Mitreva's dismissal may be seen as another example of Borisov's washout staff policy, which has very often had dire consequences.

Hristina Mitreva was appointed March 5, 2010 head of the Bulgarian Social Security Institute (NOI) after 148 MPs voted yes on her nomination. Not a single member of parliament voted against her nomination.

Mitreva's term expires on May 21, 2013.

Mitreva had served as Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Policy, a position she has held since August 2009, with particular responsibility for social security and incomes policy.

Her nomination was put forward by the Bulgarian Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Totyu Mladenov from the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party.

Mitreva replaced Sotir Ushev, who resigned from the post citing personal reasons for his departure.

Hristina Mitreva was born on August 15, 1949. She is a graduate of Sofia's Economy University with a major in Statistics.

She has worked between 1971 and 1990 in the Center for Statistics and later had been an expert at the Voluntary Retirement Contribution Fund and the Insurance Company "Bulgaria Life."

Since 1998 until becoming Deputy Minister in August 2009, Mitreva was the Head of the Main Directorate "Analysis, Planning and Prognostics" at NOI.
