UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has revealed during his visit in Bulgaria's Sofia that he had urged Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad to carry out "brave and decisive reforms".
After meeting with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Ban explained he had a very long conversation with Assad on Wednesday, and that urged the Syrian President to "listen to his people" as Syria has seen massive protests against the Assad regime in the past few weeks.
"I told him that when he announces some measures such as the lifting of the emergency law, they must be enforced immediately. I raised the issue about the violations of human rights. People who are protesting peacefully must be protected. I called upon the Syrian government to accept UN teams who will assess the humanitarian situation in Syrian cities where the security forces are staging measures against the protesters,' the UN head elaborated.
In his words, Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad replied that he will consider the issues, and will get back to him.
"I hope that he will take these matters seriously," the UN Secretary-General said regarding the advice he gave to Assad.
The situation in the Middle East, especially in Syria and Libya, was a major topic of Ban Ki-moon's talks with the Bulgarian state leadership.
