The ruling Bulgarian centrist-right GERB party should endorse the rightist Blue Coalition candidate in the upcoming presidential elections, Martin Dimitrov, the coalition's co-leader, declared Wednesday.
"GERB is in a stalemate situation, their only choice is to skip the elections," Dimitrov claimed in the country's Parliament.
The two parties in the Blue Coalition have scheduled a preliminary election which will determine their joint presidential runner by the end of May. If no other nominees emerge, Democrats for Strong Bulgaria candidate Svetoslav Malinov will face Union of Democratic Forces' Rumen Hristov in the election.
The Blue Coalition was initially GERB's ally, but has gone increasingly critical of the current government.
"(Prime Minister) Boyko Borisov's potential candidacy would mean they are giving up and trying to escape from all tasks and promises," Dimitrov added Wednesday.
Earlier that day, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who is also head of GERB's elections headquarters party, told the morning broadcast of TV7 that Borisov is one of three potential candidates the party considers for the elections in the fall.
