The youth organization of the National Movement for Stability and Prosperity have nominated former EU Commissioner and Bulgarian minister Meglena Kuneva for the upcoming presidential elections in the fall.

Kuneva, whose political career started in the Movement, was Minister for European Affairs in the cabinet of NMSP leader Simeon Saxe-Coburg, who was Bulgaria's PM 2001-5.

After Bulgaria's accession to the EU in 2007, Kuneva went on to become Bulgaria's first EU Commissioner, taking the Consumer Protection portfolio in the first Barroso commission.

Monday the youth organization of NMSP stated they have chosen April 25 - the date of signing the Accession Treaty to the EU back in 2006 - as a symbolic date to honor Kuneva's achievements.

"We want an active and respected person to become Bulgaria's President. A person moreover who is reflective and sensitive, rather than blindly ambitious," reads the organization's statement.

The Movement's young members have expressed their firm conviction that Kuneva has the vision, resolve, and positive thinking required for the position of the country's President.

Starting the early weeks of 2011, there was rife speculation in Bulgaria whether Meglena Kuneva will run for president, and if so - under what banner and with the support of which parties.

Kuneva herself has neither confirmed nor disproved that she will present her candidacy, but has stated that if she does, it will not be under the banner of any one party.
