Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov's movement, ABV, will not have its own candidate for the Presidential elections scheduled for the fall of 2011, Parvanov himself announced Thursday.

The debate surrounding the dates of the upcoming Presidential and local elections has grown too much, while the Bulgarian society is facing much bigger issues, according to Parvanov.

Bulgaria's ruling center-right party GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) has suggested that the 2011 presidential and the local elections should be held on October 23.

The Opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) leader and ex PM Sergey Stanishev opposed GERB's proposal, saying that October 23 is too early and that the ruling party aims to downplay the-election campaign. The Socialists have proposed holding the double elections on November 13, 2011.

On Thursday, Parvanov said that he will wait for the Parliament to come up with a decision on the date issue and he will support it. The outcome of the elections depends on the candidates' arguments and not on the date, he pointed out.

The next President should be "strong and energetic, not just formal," Parvanov said, as cited by Darik radio. He added that the Bulgarian political parties are waiting too long before announcing their candidates and stated an early candidacy will be a winning move.
